Why Study at SMBC?
Sydney Missionary and Bible College (SMBC) is
the oldest interdenominational Bible college in Australia and enjoys a
reputation for sound biblical and theological education. A key focus of
the college is to train men and women for gospel ministry in Australia
and overseas in a missionary context.
SMBC is:
Bible-centred: the academic curriculum is
dominated by the Bible. Students will delve deeply into the Bible.
Effective ministry requires a knowledge of God through study,
consideration, and obedience to the Scriptures.
Interdenominational: students, faculty, staff and board
members represent various denominational allegiances. Faculty encourage mutual understanding and respect for differing
denominational viewpoints.
Cross-culturally oriented: as a missionary training college SMBC is focused on the needs of the world. Missiologists on the faculty prepare students for ministry across cultural boundaries.
Concerned for the heart as well as the head: it is a concern of faculty that in addition to a knowledge of doctrine built on a deep academic foundation, students further develop a conscious, dynamic relationship with God and with His people.
Community Based: Although some students live off campus, up to 100 students live on campus. We believe there is value in learning within the close fellowship of campus life; half of the faculty also live on campus. An international community: approximately 5-10 per cent of students are from overseas, with the balance representing multicultural Australia.
Goals
Goals for our students are clear. Graduates will be:
Gospel focused: The whole of scripture focuses on the gospel of Jesus Christ. Graduates will have been introduced to the ‘big picture’ and will be able to preach Christ as much from Ecclesiastes as from the Gospel of John.
People of bold conviction: To know Christ and His gospel is to have a sense of certainty of the truth. The Spirit we have received is not one of uncertainty but of power.
People who have a heart for mission: God loves the whole world. Graduates will have a vision for evangelism not limited by local, national or denominational boundaries.
People of warmth and love: To love Christ is to love His people. Graduates will be flexible about all matters of indifference in which Christians can disagree, holding varying positions and yet being in fellowship together. (Therefore, they will be good members of a missionary/ministry team, not people of pedantic angularity.)
Fired by a zeal for God’s honour: The College motto ‘for the sake of my holy name’ will be their all consuming motivation. The qualities listed above are the fruit of studying God’s word, of being with Jesus, and, in dependence on His grace, what Sydney Missionary and Bible College proclaims.
