Sam practised medicine prior to commencing theological training at SMBC and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Chicago. Whilst in Chicago, Sam was ordained by the Chinese Christian Fellowship Church in Wilmette USA. His PhD dissertation in Systematic Theology applied speech act theory to the theory of preaching. Sam and his wife Stephanie attend West Sydney Chinese Christian Church.
