Introduction
The
Bachelor of Theology (BTh) is a three year
undergraduate degree that is accredited with the
Australian College of Theology. It aims to equip
students with or without a prior degree for full
time pastoral, evangelistic or Bible teaching
ministry. The BTh lays a foundation of Scriptural
knowledge as well as providing the basic skills to
extend and enlarge that knowledge.
This
degree provides a starting point for Christian
ministry in Australia (as pastors, assistants and
student workers), Bible College teaching or other
ministry overseas, or the pursuit of the further
academic qualifications necessary for tertiary Bible
teaching. Our graduates are currently involved in
all these activities.
The
Bachelor of Theology course is open as a first
degree to people who have achieved a University
Admission Index of at least 75.0 (or equivalent).
Entry is also considered on the basis of maturity
and practical experience. There are language
requirements for candidates whose first language is
not English. Refer to overseas
students page for details.
The
possibility exists for combining the Bachelor of
Theology with a Bachelor of Arts from either
Macquarie University or the University of Western
Sydney (Macarthur). It is recommended to consult the
current ACT Undergraduate Manual for further
information.

Course Outline
The
Bachelor of Theology requires completion of 96
credit points (cp). All subjects are four credit
points and semester length.
SMBC
requires students to study twelve Biblical subjects
(Old Testament and New Testament), and either
New Testament Greek leading to
study of the New Testament in Greek in second and
third year, or an Introduction to Greek and
Hebrew with study of the English text of the Old and
New Testaments in second and third year. Students
have the option of completing Biblical Hebrew, over and above the standard
requirements for the BTh, in their second year
leading to study of the Old Testament in Hebrew in
their third year.
Since
interpretation of Scripture is influenced by the
individual's traditions and the organisation of
God's truth, the student is acquainted with both the
history of the Christian church and the organisation
and interrelation of the truths of Scripture in
Systematic Theology.
As
ministry takes place both within Australia (there
are many cross cultural opportunities within this
country) and overseas, emphasis is also placed on
developing an awareness of the theology and strategy
of Christian mission as well as the communication of
God's truth through the preaching course.
Full
time students study the Bachelor of Theology and the
SMBC Certificate in Biblical Studies concurrently over three years. Part
time students may take up to nine years to complete
the Bachelor of Theology. However, we strongly
recommend that students plan a full time component
to their study. To graduate with the Certificate of
Biblical Studies, students complete eight core
certificate level subjects and a minimum of 24 hours
elective subjects. Subject descriptions are
contained in the Appendix. Satisfactory
participation in College community life is also a
requirement of graduation.
Students
choose a minimum of 24 hours elective Certificate subjects over the second and third year of the degree. Subjects
available will depend on timetable constraints for that year.
